On September 26, 2024, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) signed a funding agreement for the project “Learning For A Sustainable Future - Higher Education For Green Transition In Southeast Asia” (GreenEdAsia). This initiative, supported by the European Union under the ERASMUS+ program, has a total budget of 800,000 Euros.
The project will be officially launched between February 17 and 23, 2025, with the objective of fostering sustainable development through higher education in Southeast Asia. GreenEdAsia represents HCMUTE’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability and aims to spearhead green transformation in higher education in both Vietnam and the region.
Six universities will participate in the project: Ho Chi Minh University of Technology and Education (Vietnam), Dong Thap University (Vietnam), Häme University of Applied Sciences (Finland), University of Burgos (Spain), Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, and Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna (Thailand).
The primary goal of the project is to contribute to green transformation in Vietnam and Thailand by strengthening the capacity of higher education institutions to train a skilled and innovative workforce in the fields of circular bio-economy and renewable energy. A key aspect of this initiative is the creation of an innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum that incorporates sustainability principles across diverse academic disciplines. The curriculum aims to equip students with a holistic understanding of the environmental challenges and solutions required for sustainable development.
The “Learning For A Sustainable Future - Higher Education For Green Transition In Southeast Asia” project (GreenEdAsia)
GreenEdAsia is designed to deliver long-term impact by actively engaging university leadership in developing institutional-scale plans for systematic implementation. It also includes training programs for lecturers, ensuring that partner institutions are well-equipped to continue delivering the newly developed curriculum after the project's completion.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang An Quoc, Director of Office of Science and Technology at HCMUTE and the GreenEdAsia project coordinator, highlighted that since 2015, HCMUTE has participated in seven ERASMUS+ projects, but this is the first time the university is leading one. These international ERASMUS+ projects not only enhance the professional capacity of lecturers but also offer students opportunities to participate in academic exchange programs within the project framework.
As the coordinator of GreenEdAsia, HCMUTE solidifies its role as a pioneer in education and research on green technology and sustainable development. The project offers students valuable learning and research opportunities and creates connections between students, businesses, and government agencies. This helps foster a sense of social responsibility and commitment to environmental protection among students.
GreenEdAsia: Learning for a Sustainable Future - Higher Education Towards Green Transformation in Southeast Asia
GreenEdAsia marks a significant milestone in advancing green transformation in Southeast Asia, and HCMUTE is proud to be at the forefront of building a more sustainable future for the region. Through this project, HCMUTE reaffirms its mission and vision to provide higher education aligned with green transformation goals, helping train the next generation of leaders who can address environmental challenges and contribute to sustainable societal development.
