The Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) is a leading university in scientific and technological activities in the southern region of Vietnam. The significance of these activities is prominently featured in the university's vision, mission, and strategic development plans. The main scientific and technological activities include leading or participating in programs, projects, scientific research topics, and technology development; publishing research findings in scientific journals; and domestic and international conferences; transferring the technology for social benefits; organizing and participating in practical immersion, engaging international cooperations in science and technology; and conducting the scientific research activities for learners.
Over the past 61 years, HCMUTE's contributions to science and technology have achieved encouraging results, specifically:
From 2000 to 2023, the HCMUTE has led 17 national-level scientific research projects, 204 ministry-level scientific research projects as well as two ministry-level science and technology programs from the Ministry of Education and Training; two experimental production projects; numerous provincial-level scientific research projects, undertaking one scientific research plan for Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology, while also deploying totally 2,991 university-level scientific research projects for lecturers.

In terms of scientific publications, since 2013, the HCMUTE has established policies to encourage lecturers and students to publish research results in reputational scientific journals and conferences. Up to now, HCMUTE’s lecturers have published over 4,800 scientific articles, including 1,051 in international journals indexed by Web of Science and Scopus.

Regarding student’s scientific research activities, the HCMUTE has funded over 100 student’s research projects annually. HCMUTE regularly organizes academic competitions that allow students to apply their knowledge practically; those competitions include robocon, dancing robot, automated water puppetry, maze-solving robots, image-processing racing cars, RF Speed Racing, Animal robot, high-tech Christmas gift design, talented construction engineer, Smart Solution, Mock Interviews - Real Success, Accounting Excellence, Mastering IT, Hackathon, Mitsubishi Electric Cup Automation, and so on.
HCMUTE’s students have received prestigious awards, such as the national Robocon championship in 2009, and the second prize of the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest; three consecutive years of the national first prize for student scientific research from the Ministry of Education and Training; the national first prize in the entrepreneurship competition SV-Startup 2020; the first prize in the “Plastic Waste Reduction Initiative” competition in 2020 organized by World Wide Fund For Nature; Silver and Gold Award from the «RAVTE Student Innovation Award» in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
In recent years, HCMUTE has enhanced international collaboration in science and technology by organizing international conferences, such as the International Engineering and Technical Education Conference in 2013 (IETEC’13), the International Conference on System Science and Engineering (ICSSE) in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023; the International Conference on Green Technology and Sustainable Development (GTSD) in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022; the National Conference on Mechanical Science & Technology in 2015. Partners of HCMUTE include the IEEE SMCS - USA, TASSE - Taiwan, Renewable Energy Institute - the Indian Ministry of Science and Technology, the Vietnam Mechanical Association, and many universities from Thailand and Taiwan.
For its achievements, the HCMUTE's science and technology sector received commendations from the Ministry of Education and Training, including an excellent labor collective title in the 2015-2016 academic year, and certificates of merit for outstanding achievements in student scientific research activities in 2017 and 2020."
