On the morning of October 31, 2020, at the Great Hall of Zone A of University of Technology and Education, there was the program "Student Workshop in Ho Chi Minh City under the theme: Overcoming the fear of English". This was an opportunity for students to hear about ways to improve their English skills, increase their chances of choosing the right job.

P1. Overview of the exchange program.

The program "Student Workshop in Ho Chi Minh City under the theme “ Overcome the fear of English” was an activity organized by the Center for Student Counseling and Support, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (SACUTE) in collaboration with the Youth Union of the school with the desire to help students shape their goals of learning foreign language; simultaneously, point out and fix common mistakes in learning foreign languages.

Attending the program was the presence of the speaker MSc. Nguyen Mai Lam - CEO of Restart Education and Communication Joint Stock Company with 2 guests: MC Nguyen Ngoc Thanh Thao - Expertise director of Sun & Moon Language and Skills Academy and Mr. Pham Quoc Khanh - Secretary of the Delegation of Mechanical Engineering Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education and students.

During the meeting, MSc. Nguyen Mai Lam pointed out the reasons leading to sutdents’ loss in basic English command. The most obvious one was despite of their high test scores in class (over 7.0), it was difficult to apply that knowledge in everyday communication. At the same time, the teacher pointed out a number of reasons that make learning English difficult for students such as: mispronouncing, just learning theories without practice which lead to their loss of communication ability. As days passed, the "fear" of using English grew bigger.

To help students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education overcome their fear of English, MSc. Nguyen Mai Lam had reshaped the purpose of learning English for the students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education under the four pillars of UNESSCO. "Learning to know", "learning to do", "learning to live together" and "Learning to be". Simultaneously, MSc. Lam also emphasized that in order to learn English well, it was necessary to not only define good goals and methods, but also need to put 300% effort into the learning process. With good English skills, students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education will have many better career opportunities  that are suitable for themselves with higher income levels after graduation.

The program "UTE Student Workshop with the topic: Overcoming the fear of English” was an opportunity for students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education to recognize and correct their mistakes in learning foreign languages; it had simultaneously established suitable goals and learning methods to overcome their fear of using English, thereby achieving good academic achievements and confidently applying for every job position in the future.
