Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) team ranked first at the 4th Student Chess Tournament hosted by Van Lang University from 6th to 7th April 2019.

The chess players finished in third place in both men’s team and women’s team categories, helping them rank top in the tournament.


HCMUTE Chess team receives awards at the 4th Student Chess Tournament. They ranked top among the 18 competitor groups, with 2 third places in men’s and women’s team categories, and 3 other individual prizes.

The other runners-up were Banking University, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, International University and University of Science (Vietnam National University).

The total prizes were up to VND 42,300,000 in cash, allotted to 26 individuals, 10 men’s and women’s team awards, and 5 whole team champions.

Swiss system and Vietnam National Sports Committee’s chess rules were applied in the tournament. 

Accordingly, each player had to compete in 5 (for women) or 9 (for men) games, each of which was supposed to last for 25 minutes. Based on their scores, the ranking for individual players, men’s and women’s teams, as well as the whole team were determined.

Mr. Lam Minh Chau, Chess coach, Member of Vietnam Chess Federation’s Executive Committee, presents the women’s team awards to University of Medicine and Pharmacy (first place), Van Lang University (second place) and University of Technology and Education (third place).

Student Chess Tournament is an annual competition sponsored by Vietnam bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank), under consultancy of Ho Chi Minh City Student Association and Vietnam Chess Federation.

This year’s event featured over 180 players from 18 Ho Chi Minh City-based universities and colleges*, each of which sent a men’s team and a women’s team, competing in two classes: amateurs and professionals.

The tournament is a great chance for students of different universities to exchange experience and train themselves for bigger championships.

* The other 12 participating universities include (all based in Ho Chi Minh City): University of Technology (Bach Khoa), University of Sports, FPT University, Saigon Technology University, University of Technology (HUTECH), University of Communications and Transportation (Campus in Ho Chi Minh City), University of Transport, University of Economics and Law, Technical and Economics College, University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology, University of Information Technology, and University of Medicine Pham Ngoc Thach.
