Workshop Launch Between HCMUTE and KMEA College of Architecture
From 28th September to 10th October, 2024, the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) successfully organized an academic exchange program with 56 faculty members and students from KMEA College of Architecture, India. This program provided opportunities not only for professional knowledge exchange but also for equipping students with essential skills for global integration.
The collaboration with KMEA College of Architecture originated from a unique opportunity when Dr. Do Xuan Son, Head of the Architecture Department at HCMUTE’s Faculty of Civil Engineering, was introduced to the potential for cooperation between the two institutions by a friend. Through information exchanges via email and online platforms, the relationship gradually strengthened, eventually leading to the decision to hold an international workshop for students from both universities. Dr. Do Xuan Son emphasized: “International collaboration in education plays a key role in providing HCMUTE students with global learning experiences. We are committed to creating the best opportunities for them.”

The process of organizing this international workshop brought numerous benefits but also posed several challenges. One of the initial obstacles was the lack of detailed information about the partner institution. HCMUTE’s faculty diligently researched KMEA College of Architecture through online resources and received support from the International Relations Office and the board of Faculty. Hosting a workshop involving 52 students and 4 lecturers from KMEA for a 12-day stay in Vietnam required thorough planning—from academic activities and cultural exchange events to accommodation and security arrangements.
Language differences also posed a major challenge, but HCMUTE students quickly adapted and confidently communicated in English during discussions and presentations. This positively reflected on the international integration capabilities of HCMUTE students. Another difficulty was scheduling conflicts with regular classes; however, the university flexibly adjusted the timetable to ensure that students could participate in all activities without affecting their academic programs.

Internationalization: The Foundation of Modern Educational Development
The workshop was not only an enriching experience but also played an important role in enhancing the quality of architectural education at HCMUTE. At KMEA College of Architecture, students study the subject "Urban Design" for an entire semester, earning 5 credits, whereas at HCMUTE, this subject accounts for only 2+1 credits, equivalent to 60 hours of study. To bridge the gap in learning hours between the two schools, HCMUTE flexibly added a field trip component worth 1 credit, providing students with additional time for field research.
In the context of globalization, the internationalization of higher education has become a key factor in improving training quality and achieving sustainable development. At HCMUTE, internationalization is emphasized not only through knowledge transfer but also through academic exchanges, global research collaborations, and international workshops. These efforts enhance the quality of teaching and promote HCMUTE’s brand on the global stage.
The workshop “Sustainable Riverfront Urban Design” is a testament to HCMUTE's internationalization process. HCMUTE students had the opportunity to learn from KMEA’s faculty and students about sustainable urban design, engaging in discussions, hands-on activities, and applying theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios. Through these multicultural group activities, students not only improved their technical skills but also developed essential teamwork and international communication abilities—crucial skills for the global job market. Lê Văn Quyền, a fourth-year student from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, shared: "Participating in group activities with international friends helped me improve my skills and broaden my perspective. The differences in culture and design thinking taught me to empathize, respect diversity, and enhance my creative thinking."

Discovering Indian Architecture: New Inspiration for HCMUTE Students
India, one of the world’s great civilizations, is renowned for its distinctive architectural marvels—from the Taj Mahal, a harmonious blend of Islamic and Hindu architectural styles, to modern structures like the Infosys technology company headquarters. Exposure to India’s diverse architectural culture provided fresh design inspiration for HCMUTE students. Learning about the balance between tradition and modernity, as well as the efficient use of space, materials, and colors, not only enhanced their design skills but also deepened their understanding of global architectural trends—preparing them for future design careers after graduation.

The academic exchange program between HCMUTE and KMEA College of Architecture underscores the importance of internationalization in higher education. Through these activities, students not only gain professional knowledge but also develop soft skills, enabling them to become responsible global citizens. International education is the key to unlocking new opportunities, empowering HCMUTE students to confidently integrate and face the challenges of the 21st century.
Experience from KMEA College of Architecture (India)
The collaboration between KMEA College of Architecture and HCMUTE provided memorable learning experiences for both faculty and students while fostering cultural and professional exchanges between Vietnam and India. This partnership enriched students' professional knowledge and gave them a deeper understanding of one another through shared activities.
Post-workshop cultural exchange activities
KMEA faculty members were impressed by the modern learning environment at HCMUTE, which seamlessly integrates high-rise architecture with natural spaces. Nandala LS, a faculty member from KMEA, remarked, “The modern facilities here not only support teaching but also spark student creativity.” She also observed similarities in academic fields between the two schools, opening up opportunities for future collaborations, such as workshops and student exchanges.
Although there were initial language barriers, KMEA students quickly adapted and worked effectively with HCMUTE students. Aparna Suresh, a KMEA student, noted, “I felt wonderful working with hardworking and dynamic friends.” KMEA students also appreciated the warmth and hospitality of HCMUTE, creating a vibrant learning atmosphere. Alan K Varghese, another KMEA student, shared, “We learned how to work in teams, where everyone’s individual strengths contributed to mutual support.”

The workshop at HCMUTE not only provided KMEA students with architectural knowledge but also allowed them to experience university life in Vietnam. They were excited to immerse themselves in Vietnamese culture and explore new aspects of life. Tours of Ho Chi Minh City helped them understand the intersection of culture and architecture, and how cultural elements can be incorporated into design. A KMEA student shared: "Through the tours in Ho Chi Minh City, we saw how culture and architecture intertwine, and how cultural elements can be integrated into design." This experience broadened their architectural horizons and helped shape creative ideas for future projects.

The workshop served as a solid foundation for building long-lasting relationships between KMEA College of Architecture and HCMUTE faculty and students. It also acted as a cultural bridge between the two nations, creating opportunities for future collaboration, not only in research but also in development projects. These positive impressions from the program promise new opportunities, fostering sustainable growth and long-term cooperation, while elevating the field of architecture in both countries.
