On Wednesday December 09th 2015, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) has organized a solemn Graduation Ceremony 2015 and the 10th-year anniversary of the collaboration between Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education and University of Sunderland (UoS), UK. On this special occasion, 100 graduates of the collaboration between HCMUTE and UoS, UK have been honored to receiveUoS degrees. There were presences of numerous domestic and international representatives from many organizations andagencies.
On the occasion of this landmark, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hung –UoSPhuNhuan Campus Manager said, "University of Sunderland carries on its missions to create the best conditions for students in Vietnam to access to the advanced education system of United Kingdomthrough collaborative training programs. This has enabled students not to study far away from home. I feel happy when looking back for a period of ten years. UoS has gained significant and proud achievements”.
During the period of ten-year development, UoS has been training over 10,000 students. Among them 7,000 students have graduated and most of them are working for big companies or multinational conglomerates such as Ernst & Young, KPMG, Microsoft, Intel, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Sanyo, Panasonic, Shell, Nokia, Standard Chartered, Prudential, Nissan, etc.

Being officiallypresentin Vietnam since 2006, UoS is the first university of the United Kingdom approved by the Ministry of Education and Training in Vietnam to run the collaborative programs. UoS has also been one of the pioneers that familiarizes international in-country programs to Vietnamese students. At the time of UoS was established, our country was going through the transition period when the government implemented the policy of international economic, social, and especially educational integration. Capturing that trend, UoShas brought Vietnamese students the opportunities to learnUK accredited programs verified by QAA (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education)with the total expense of about one third of that foroverseas study. With good and clever strategies, UoS has quickly attracted thousands of students in three big cities Hanoi, DaNang and Ho Chi Minh City through the collaborative programs in Business Management, Banking and Finance, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Furthermore, UoS has always focused on the development of Vietnamese teaching staff and administrative staff. Unlike some universities following the trend of appointing foreigners as operations managers, right from the beginning, UoS has taken the initiative to "localize" the management board, helping teaching and management staffs of its partners including Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, National Economics University in Hanoi, Banking Academy in Hanoi and DaNang Economics University to familiarize themselves with the teachingand management activities of the collaborative programs. In addition, UoS has regularly deployed training programs and seminars on pedagogy, effective classroom management and students’progress assessment.
Due to the fact that the current education system focusing heavily on theory, many students who completed traditional programs could not meet the increasing needs of the labor market in terms of technical/professional and soft skills. The establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in late 2015has set forth more challenges: the arrival of skilled workforce from the neighboring countries will createcompetitive pressureson young workforceof the country. In the meanwhile, taking into account the reality in workplaces and incorporating various instructional methodologiessuch as case studies, research projects, field trips to companies, and seminars, UoS curriculum was designed to shorten the gap between students’ abilities and employers’ expectations. Students of UoS Programs can not only communicate well in English - the official language of the AECbut also demonstrate logical thinking, leadership, teamwork skills etc., thereby they are confident in leading their future and contribute effectively to the development of the country.
In the context ofVietnam's steady economic growth leading to an increase inthe society’s needs, UoSwill continue to implement development plans both in depth and breadth. The University’s orientationsare to promote partnership with public universities in the country to disseminate models of collaborative programs and seek to boost its presence in the Southeast Asian countries. Apart from its international Bachelor programs which have confirmed its position in the market;UoSdoes not want to hide its wishes to import the world’ high-qualityeducationalproducts to Vietnam.

Ten years is not too long; but it is enough to mark a milestone in the journey of UoS programs in Vietnam. On this special occasion, the Management Staff of both Universities would like to thank students and their parents for their support and would like to commit to a continuous improvement ofthe educationalquality in order to deservepeople’s truston UoS during the past period as well as in the future.
